Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
